THE REAL MOULIN ROUGE
- Toulouse was really a dwarf (4'11) attendee of the MR and was an artist
- Mome Fromage (the "large" Diamond Dog) was really a "Dog" at the MR
- Chocolat (the dude that hits the duke) was real, too
- There really was a large elephant with a nightclub inside and a morphine room
Cool Information (Taken from "Backstory: Moulin Rouge" from AMC)
- It took $50 million and 5 sound stages to make Moulin Rouge
Factors that postponed the release of Moulin Rouge from December, 200 to June, 2001 (also taken from "Backstory: Moulin Rouge")
- Nicole broke her rib due to extreme dance practices within first couple weeks
- The news that Baz's father had died arrived the day they were to begin filming. The cast and crew were all "suited up" and ready to begin shooting when the terrible news came to them.
- Nicole was, again, injured. This time, in the knee. It happened during the filming of the scene where "Come What May" ends and Christian shouts "Because she doesn't love you" and she walks down the stage seductively. The filming continued, however, Nicole was in a wheelchair, so they could only film close ups. ONe such example of these closeups was when she's singing "Diamonds" and she and Zidler are changing. You can sort of tell theres a wheelchair handle-shaped object behind her.
Information taken from the DVD Audio Commentary feature:
- Toulouse (John Leguizamo), in his sitar costume, actually had his legs bent into the bottom half to make himself more mobile for the dancing in Spectacular, Spectacular. This resulted in the need for physical therapy!
